Pretty cool project! I have kin from Wetzel county West Virginia. I like to spend as much time as I can on my grandparents’s property, near Hundred WV.
This is so cool and so soothing to listen to. I love an Appalachian accent wholeheartedly (maybe because I used to have one…sad story!). My question is: did anyone have the audacity to pronounce it Appa-laysha? My husband is from Parkersburg, WV, near the Ohio border, and as someone from Kanawha County I was aghast to hear him pronounce Appalachia that way (aka, the wrong way.) Wondering if you found that iteration, too, while compiling voices for this project?
What an incredible project! I am now looking for where to listen to all of these beautiful voices!
We will post an update in the next couple of weeks with how to listen!
That’s amazing! I can’t believe 800 people submitted 🔥

You should be born and raised in the county you are speaking for correct?
That is ideally what we are looking for, yes.
I live in West Tennessee but I have lots of friends from Mississippi. Is it okay if I advertise this project on my socials?
love this project. not embarrassed to admit I teared up a bit listening to some of the recordings of the accents 🥹
Still need Union and Cherokee counties in SC? There must be some Gaffney peeps out there who can help. Lockhart?
